Global electric vehicle numbers surge to record high

The global demand for environmentally friendly vehicles is increasing. According to a study conducted by the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research (ZSW) in Germany, the number of electric vehicles worldwide reached 74 million by the end of 2025. This figure is notable for being approximately 19 million higher than in 2024.
These statistics include fully electric cars, hybrid vehicles, and extended-range electric vehicles. This was reported by the German international news service — Deutsche Welle.
According to the report, more than half of all electric vehicles are used in China — their number in this country has exceeded 44 million. Additionally, the countries with the highest number of electric vehicles include the USA (7 million), Germany (3.2 million), the United Kingdom (2.8 million), and France (2.5 million).
Interestingly, when 14 major European countries are counted together, their total share exceeds 16 million, showing a significantly higher result than the USA.
ZSW representative Andreas Pyuttner noted that recent sharp fluctuations in fuel prices have further intensified interest in electric vehicles. In his view, electric vehicle owners are less dependent on fossil fuels and are better protected from price volatility.
Among manufacturers, the Chinese company BYD holds the lead. It is followed by the American company Tesla and the German Volkswagen Group.
Experts believe that the electric vehicle market will expand further in the coming years, and the share of traditional fuel-powered cars is expected to gradually decrease.
