The sloth bear, found in India, Nepal, and Sri Lanka, is considered one of the most aggressive wild animals in Asia. With its long claws and sharp teeth, it can attack not only tigers but also humans. From 1950 to 2019, it accounted for the highest number of large predator attacks — 1,337 cases.
Primarily feeding on fruits and ants, this bear immediately attacks when it senses a threat. This defense strategy evolved mainly to survive encounters with tigers, lions, and leopards. However, when encountering humans, the consequences are often severe.
The sloth bear population is declining due to habitat loss and retaliatory attacks by humans. Fewer than 20,000 remain worldwide, and the species is listed as “vulnerable” in the International Red List.
In Gujarat and Maharashtra states, people frequently enter forests to collect firewood, fruits, or medicinal plants, leading to many encounters. Protecting the sloth bear is important for the region’s ecological stability.
