Today we will talk about the importance of choosing the right sunglasses from a medical point of view. For many people, they may seem like just a fashionable accessory, but in fact, this item plays a crucial role in maintaining eye health. However, if chosen incorrectly, sunglasses that are considered useful can actually cause serious harm to the eyes.
The main function of sunglasses is to protect the eyes from ultraviolet radiation, which is invisible to the human eye but extremely dangerous. Therefore, first of all, you must make sure that the glasses you purchase have a reliable filter. Otherwise, instead of protecting from the sun, they will cause more damage to the inner structures of the eyes.
The ideal option is sunglasses that completely block ultraviolet rays. Such protection is indicated by the marking «UV400». This means that the lenses block all ultraviolet rays up to a wavelength of 400 nanometers. The minimum acceptable level is «UV380».
Another important aspect is the color of the lenses. For example, gray and brown lenses hardly distort color perception, so they are the most convenient and universal choice for drivers.
Yellow or yellowish lenses are ideal for cloudy days, as well as for early morning or evening use. They block the harmful blue part of the spectrum and provide good contrast in low light. However, color perception in such lenses is significantly distorted.
Pink lenses are useful in changing light conditions. They provide comfort for the eyes, but they are not suitable for constant use — only for short-term wearing.
Now about the wrong choices. Blue lenses, although they may seem stylish and fashionable, are actually harmful to the eyes. They not only distort colors but also allow the blue spectrum to freely enter the eyes. This can negatively affect vision.
The same applies to red lenses. Despite their modern look, they cause eye fatigue and irritate the nervous system. Therefore, such glasses should be chosen only for short-term use.
