FIFA President Gianni Infantino, the president of world football's governing body, has expressed hope that Russia will be allowed to compete again in international competitions. He made the comments in an interview with The Guardian in response to US President Donald Trump's claim that he was unaware of the ban on Russian football teams from international competitions.
"At the moment, Russian clubs and national teams are banned from international competition. But we are confident that the situation will improve and peace will be established. Only then will Russian players and clubs be allowed to compete again in international competitions," the FIFA president said.
Gianni Infantino also hopes that sport will be free from politics and that football will strengthen peace and friendship between countries and peoples. He stressed that FIFA will always strive to ensure that international competitions remain a means of unity and peace.
As is known, Russian football teams have been deprived of the right to participate in international tournaments organized by UEFA and FIFA since 2022 due to the situation in Ukraine. This ban applies not only to national teams, but also to all club teams in the country.
In this regard, the Russian national team was also excluded from the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. In addition, the country's clubs were also excluded from the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League.
Infantino's statement means that new opportunities may open for Russian football. If peace is established in the international situation, it is possible that Russia's place in world football will be restored.
The comments made by the FIFA president have become the focus of attention of the international community and have further strengthened the hopes of fans that Russian clubs and the national team will soon return to major competitions.
It is worth recalling that US President Donald Trump recently stressed that sports can improve relations between countries, and therefore he is not against Russian teams participating in international football competitions.
So far, FIFA and the international community have not announced a date for Russia's return to international football. However, negotiations in this direction and the improvement of the international situation may provide new opportunities for Russian football. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
