Maksim Shatskikh: “Uzbekistan's World Cup qualification is a major historical achievement”
After Uzbekistan’s national team reached the World Cup finals for the first time, the football community feels a great sense of celebration and pride. The legendary striker of Kyiv’s Dynamo and the Uzbekistan national team, and currently the head coach of Andijan club, Maksim Shatskikh, gave an interview to “Ukrainian Football” and shared his opinion about the national team's historic achievement.

“The time had come for World Cup qualification”

According to Shatskikh, this success is not accidental. He emphasizes that the result was achieved thanks to many years of hard work, players playing abroad, a strong league, and valuable experience. “We always dreamed of qualifying for the World Cup, and now that dream has come true. FIFA’s decision to increase Asia’s quota also helped. Our national team performed confidently both in terms of results and gameplay in the group stage. The main thing is that we have a strong team and good players — this is the key to success,” said Shatskikh.

Serious progress in Uzbek football

The legendary forward also commented on the playing style of the national team. “During qualifying, the team almost did not change its scheme and tactics. Depending on the opponent, they showed they could quickly transition from defense to attack or play attacking football,” he said. He also noted that it is a big achievement that players are gaining experience not only in the domestic championship but also in various foreign clubs.

On Kazakhstan not returning to the AFC

Answering journalists’ questions, Shatskikh commented on Kazakhstan’s presence in UEFA. “I have always been interested in this issue. If Kazakhstan had stayed in the AFC, their chances of reaching the World Cup would have been higher. They have a strong team, but their opportunities in European competitions are limited,” he said.

Trust in Timur Kapadze and a new era

Shatskikh positively assessed that the national team is now led by young specialist Timur Kapadze. “He achieved results without reforms, maintaining the existing system. The national team fulfilled its task confidently and opened the door to the World Cup,” said Shatskikh. He also acknowledged the Olympic team project and how it has motivated young players.

New challenges ahead of the finals

At the 2026 World Cup, the Uzbekistan national team will participate in the finals for the first time in history. This is a stage of challenges and opportunities not only for the players and coaches but for the entire country. According to the legendary striker Shatskikh, this historic achievement will open new doors for football development and be a huge motivation for the next generation.
