Igor Shkvyrin — a forward remembered by fans for his performances with "Pakhtakor" and the Uzbekistan national team. He shared one of the lesser-known stories of his career in the podcast "Fint Turaeva".
According to him, he received offers from several European clubs, but for various reasons, the moves did not materialize. In fact, Shkvyrin admits that sometimes, not making the move actually benefited him.
— I was playing in the starting lineup for "Alania". An invitation came from Belgium, from a club called "Lokeren" based in a small town. I went for a trial, played three friendly matches, and scored in each one, — recalls Shkvyrin.
However, despite his performance, the club decided not to sign him. The reason, he says, was surprising:
— The coach said he wouldn’t take me into the team. The most surprising part — he told me, “You are too technical.” I was never a technical player. I think it was just an excuse. Maybe he already had a player in that position, — he said with a smile.
He didn’t stop there. Shkvyrin also went to Austria to try out for "Vorwärts":
— I played two games there and scored two goals. Then I checked out the financial offer, walked around the shops, and realized that with such a salary, I wouldn't be able to afford anything, — he added.
So, although his dream of playing in Europe didn’t come true, Shkvyrin looks back at it with no regret. Instead, he believes he made the right decision at the time.
