It has become known that the International Football Federation (FIFA) plans to implement significant changes in penalty kicking procedures starting next season. This was reported by the influential German publication "Bild." The newly proposed rule calls for serious discussions in the football world.
According to reports, if a player executes a penalty kick and the goalkeeper deflects it, the striker cannot direct the ball into the goal with a second attempt. According to the new rules, in this case, the game will not continue, but the goalkeeper will have the right to take the ball into play with a free kick.
At the same time, no specific information has been provided on what to do in cases where a penalty kick hits a post or beam. This aspect remains an open question and requires further discussion.
For the new procedure to come into force, it must be officially approved by the International Council of Football Associations (IFAB). If a decision is made, it will first be tested in various competitions, and its full implementation will begin in the 2026/2027 season.
At the same time, it is clear that this rule will not apply to the World Championships, which will be held in the USA, Canada, and Mexico from June 11 to July 19, 2026. Because there are no plans to introduce experimental changes at the major tournament.
Football experts and fans react differently to this proposal. Some believe that this procedure limits opportunities for forwards, while others believe it will increase the prestige of goalkeepers and make their role even more important.
Undoubtedly, if the rule is adopted, a new era in the history of penalty scoring could begin in the football world.
