A major controversy has erupted around Argentine football. According to reports by “La Nacion,” the national team faces the possibility of being excluded from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The reason lies in a comprehensive corruption case within the Argentine Football Association (AFA).
Sources indicate that the investigation focuses on AFA President Claudio Tapia, his close confidant Pablo Toviggino, and Deputy Head of the Finance Department Luciano Nakis. Judicial authorities are examining whether a 10-hectare property located in Pilar, complete with a helicopter landing pad, a horse farm, and more than 50 vintage cars, was acquired through legitimate means.
The publication emphasized that if this case is brought to trial and it is confirmed that government authorities have unlawfully interfered in the activities of the football federation, FIFA may impose serious sanctions. This could significantly increase the likelihood of Argentina’s national team, the reigning world champion, being disqualified from the World Cup.
Reports suggest that earlier, law enforcement agencies conducted raids at the AFA headquarters and 13 football clubs across the country. Investigators suspect that these clubs may have been involved in money laundering and illegal financial activities.
Particularly notable are the cases related to the company “Sur Finanzas.” It is alleged that the company issued loans to clubs and subsequently recovered payments through television and marketing rights. Interestingly, the company is reportedly owned by Ariel Vallejo, a close associate of AFA President Tapia.
No official decisions have been made yet. However, the deepening investigation suggests that the case might escalate to an international level. If the allegations are proven, it is expected to create a massive shock in the football world — as the issue concerns not just individuals but the fate of the reigning world champion national team.
