Uli Hoeneß: The match against Barcelona was the biggest humiliation in Bayern's history

Bayern honorary president Uli Hoeneß still remembers the 2009 Champions League quarter-final match against Barcelona with pain. In an interview with FAZ, the 74-year-old official, when asked if he had not looked forward to any game in the last 25 years, cited the second leg against the Catalans as an exception. This is reported by Goal.com .

In the first leg at Camp Nou, Pep Guardiola's side humiliated Bayern. By the end of the first half, Lionel Messi (brace), Samuel Eto'o, and Thierry Henry had brought the score to 4-0. Hoeneß, who was sitting on the bench next to Jürgen Klinsmann at the time, admitted he was anxiously checking his watch, waiting for the game to end.

According to Uli Hoeneß, the Barcelona players showed mercy to Bayern that night. He believes the Catalans decided among themselves at halftime to ease off in the second half. This defeat remained the heaviest blow for Bayern at that time.

Although the return leg in Munich ended in a 1-1 draw, this result could not save Bayern from a failed season. Consequently, Jürgen Klinsmann was dismissed and replaced temporarily by Jupp Heynckes, before Louis van Gaal later took charge of the team.
