Google is paving the way to understanding dolphin language using artificial intelligence
Google is developing a new artificial intelligence technology to understand dolphin communication and language structure. The project is being carried out in partnership with the Wild Dolphin Project (WDP), which has been studying marine mammal vocalizations for over 40 years, according to Fox News.

The project centers on a special AI model called DolphinGemma, designed to analyze the meanings behind dolphin sounds. This AI is built using a massive database of audio recordings gathered by WDP over decades, aiming to identify how each sound corresponds to certain behaviors.

According to researchers, every dolphin sound has specific meaning and context. For instance, mother-calf pairs use signature whistles to locate one another. Pulsed calls may signal conflict or warning, and low rumbles can indicate social interaction or danger (like sharks).

DolphinGemma compares these sounds to a large database, potentially allowing for the creation of words, phrases, and even full sentences — which could lead to the first complete dolphin language dictionary.

Technologically, the project is based on Google Pixel smartphone tech, including high-accuracy underwater audio capture. It filters out environmental noise like waves or engine sounds to isolate dolphin signals clearly.

Researchers say the model will be publicly released in summer 2025. While it is currently trained on Atlantic spotted dolphins, it may later be adapted to other species like bottlenose or spinner dolphins.

Project developers believe this innovation could greatly expand human-animal communication, marking a new era in connecting with the marine world. If successful, it may allow humans to build deeper and more meaningful relationships with dolphins.
