In the global transition to sustainable energy sources, another revolutionary technology has been tested in Finland. Built in the municipality of Pornainen in Southern Finland and officially launched today, the sand battery — recognized as the largest in the world — is ready to bring serious changes not only to local but also global energy infrastructure. This massive structure is 13 meters high and 15 meters wide.
Essence of the technology and advantages
Inside the sand battery is approximately 2,000 tons of crushed soapstone — steatite — a natural material with excellent heat retention capacity. When electricity is produced in excess, it is transferred through pipes to the stone material, where it is stored for hours, days, or even weeks. When needed, the stored energy is released in the form of water and steam and is effectively used in industrial or district heating systems.
The new sand battery can deliver 1 megawatt of thermal energy and store up to 100 megawatt-hours. This allows for collecting excess energy when demand is low and using it when demand increases.
Environmental and economic benefit
Environmentally, the sand battery helps reduce annual carbon emissions by 160 tons. With the potential to reduce heat loss by up to 70%, this technology is seen as one of the most relevant future solutions for clean energy.
The main problem of green energy is that solar and wind power are only generated at certain times. The sand battery solves this issue by allowing excess energy to be stored and quickly accessed when needed. This not only improves the stability of power grids but also provides companies with competitiveness and economic advantage.
A new era is beginning
According to Finnish company CEO Mikko Paajanen, by 2035 the country aims to significantly reduce its climate impact. The sand battery is considered a major step toward that goal.
