Since the start of 2025, Telegram has deleted more than 20.9 million channels and groups. According to the company, this marks the largest cleanup in the messenger’s history. Notably, on July 27, a record-breaking 402,000+ channels and groups were blocked in a single day.
On July 3, another massive purge took place, closing 314,000 channels. While no specific reasons were given, most removals are typically linked to user complaints, fraud, extortion, or the unauthorized sharing of personal data.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov stated that the company has recently focused on protecting the platform from “doxing” and illegal content. In addition, the messenger is introducing a user rating system.
This new system will allow each user to see their account’s standing. It is noted that this rating may in the future be tied to access to paid services or additional features.
