EU Recommends Avoiding Huawei and ZTE Equipment

The European Commission has recommended that European Union member states refrain from using equipment from Huawei and ZTE. A Commission spokesperson at a briefing in Brussels stressed that this decision is aimed at improving the security of telecommunications networks.

It is reported that new cybersecurity rules, which are nearing final adoption, will make it possible to restrict the entry of products from "high-risk suppliers" into the market. According to officials, technologies used in strategic infrastructure are of great importance to national and regional security. For this reason, requirements for equipment used in the telecommunications sector are being tightened further. In response, the Chinese side expressed its opposition to these rules. According to available information, Beijing has characterised such decisions as discriminatory and warned of the possibility of retaliatory measures.
