OpenAI, one of the world's leading technology companies, is planning to develop a completely new type of smartphone based on artificial intelligence. This was announced by renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo on the X (Twitter) social network.
He noted that mass production of this device could begin in 2027. Within a short period of two years, it is expected to sell up to 30 million units, indicating high interest in the new product.
According to sources, the main chips for the smartphone will be supplied by the Taiwan-based company MediaTek. The device will be equipped with a specially designed flagship processor, the Dimensity 9600.
This chip will be manufactured using advanced 2nm technology at the factories of TSMC, one of the world's largest semiconductor manufacturers.
Analysts believe the core concept of the project is to move away from traditional mobile apps and replace them with an AI agent featuring a unified intelligent interface. Instead of switching between different apps, users will be able to perform all tasks using a single universal AI.
Experts consider the smartphone the most suitable device for this, as it is currently the most popular and widespread gadget. OpenAI also believes it is crucial to control not only the software but also the hardware to create a full-power AI ecosystem. Therefore, the company has chosen to develop the device from scratch.
Furthermore, the company is actively developing other innovative hardware projects. Notably, last year OpenAI acquired a startup founded by former Apple chief designer Jony Ive for $6.5 billion. The new device being developed by this startup is expected to be compact, screenless, and capable of gathering environmental data via cameras and microphones.
According to The Wall Street Journal, the company also considered separating its robotics and AI hardware divisions into distinct structures late last year to attract external investors. However, this idea was temporarily shelved due to IPO preparations.
Overall, the new generation smartphone being prepared by OpenAI could cause major shifts in the digital technology market. If this project succeeds, it is highly likely to take the concept of a standard smartphone to a completely new level.
