Revolution in the Chinese automotive market: Electric vehicles take the lead

The Chinese automotive market has recorded a historic milestone: in April 2026, the share of New Energy Vehicles (NEV) exceeded 60 percent for the first time, reaching 61.4 percent. According to the China Passenger Car Association, only one internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicle remains among the top ten best-selling models in the country. This is reported by Ixbt.com news.
The sales leader is the Geely Xingyuan (Geely Galaxy EX2), which sold 34,727 units. It is followed by the Xiaomi SU7 and Tesla Model Y. The only gasoline car in the top 10 is the Geely Coolray, which took eighth place with 14,923 units. For comparison, the leading model found nearly 2.3 times more buyers than its gasoline rival.
The situation for ICE vehicles is deteriorating sharply. While seven of the top ten were gasoline models in January, that figure dropped to five in March. Currently, the market has almost completely shifted to the control of electric vehicles and hybrids. Models from BYD, Li Auto, and Leapmotor also made it into the April ranking.
In total, 1.384 million passenger cars were sold in China in April, which is 21.5 percent less than last year. However, while the decline in the NEV segment was only 6.8 percent, gasoline car sales plummeted by 37 percent. Analysts attribute this shift to high fuel prices and increased consumer confidence in electric transport.
