US residents oppose construction of data centers

A new Gallup poll shows a sharp increase in opposition to the construction of data centers in the US. Currently, 70% of Americans oppose having such facilities near their homes. For comparison, this figure was 47% in previous polls. According to The Washington Post, residents would even prefer to live next to a nuclear power plant than a large data center. This is reported by Ixbt.com reports .
The rapid development of artificial intelligence technologies has increased the demand for data centers, causing social conflicts across the country. Restrictions or moratoriums on the construction of such facilities have already been introduced in 69 US jurisdictions. Many projects are stalling due to public outcry and political pressure.
One of the main reasons for the opposition is the increased load on power grids and the resulting rise in electricity bills. In some regions, prices have risen by up to 267% against the backdrop of infrastructure expansion. Residents are also concerned about noise, excessive water consumption, and environmental impacts.
This situation is becoming a serious problem for the entire artificial intelligence industry. Project approval timelines are extending, and the permitting process is becoming more complex. Although the US government has called on major tech companies to fund infrastructure development, no significant changes have been observed yet.
