NHTSA investigates rear suspension issues in Rivian R1 models

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into Rivian's service procedures for rear suspension components in its electric vehicles. The probe follows complaints from two drivers who reported losing control while driving. It was revealed that both vehicles had previously undergone service, and one had been involved in a collision before the repair. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .
According to the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) at NHTSA, Rivian identified in March 2025 that the "toe link," a critical component ensuring rear wheel alignment, is highly sensitive to service procedures. The company subsequently updated its repair instructions for this part. Experts are currently investigating the causes of these failures and the condition of approximately 115,000 R1 models produced between 2023 and 2024.
One of the complaining drivers reported losing control at high speed, striking another vehicle and a barrier. In the second case, an R1S owner stated that the vehicle moved uncontrollably across lanes and bike paths after the left rear toe link fractured. In a statement to TechCrunch, Rivian representatives emphasized that safety is a priority and that data indicates these parts are performing as expected.
This investigation comes at an inconvenient time for Rivian, as the company plans to begin deliveries of its new, highly anticipated R2 SUV in the coming days. Additionally, the company aims to increase its number of service centers to over 150 by the end of 2027. Rivian remains confident that the simpler design of the new R2 model will reduce future maintenance complexities.
