US military personnel targeted via location data

The US Department of Defense has confirmed that enemy forces tracked and targeted military personnel on the battlefield using commercial location data. This situation once again proves how dangerous information collected from smartphones and computers can become for tracking individuals. This is reported by Techcrunch.com reports .
In a letter provided to TechCrunch by Senator Ron Wyden, US Central Command (USCENTCOM) stated it is aware that enemy forces are using purchased geolocation data. The letter notes that the command has received several alarming reports regarding the use of commercial data to track service members.
Location data is often collected through online advertising systems and subsequently sold on the open market by data brokers. Governments and military organizations, including the US itself, have been observed purchasing such data without a court order in the past.
In recent years, the FBI has been urging users to utilize ad blockers to reduce the volume of data collected by apps and websites. In an interview with Reuters, Senator Wyden emphasized that it is time to view the adtech industry as a national security threat.
