Legal update: torture prevention in detention facilities
On June 26, 2025, a new amendment was made to Uzbekistan’s Law “On Detention During Criminal Proceedings” (Law No. O‘RQ–1072), Uz24.uz reported.

According to the new provision:
. Detainees must undergo a mandatory medical examination before being placed in a detention center.
. The medical check must be completed within 2 hours of arrival at the facility.
. With the detainee’s consent, their lawyer may be present during the examination.
. The results are documented in an official medical certificate in the approved format.

If any injuries, wounds, or signs of harm are found during the exam, they must be officially recorded, the detainee informed, and the prosecutor notified without delay.
