Water Resource Management and Irrigation Development: New Program Announced

Efforts to manage water resources rationally, use them effectively, and protect them have reached a new level in Uzbekistan. The primary goal is to elevate the management of water resources and the irrigation sector, and a separate program has been approved for this purpose. The President has signed the program “Management of Water Resources and Development of the Irrigation Sector for 2025-2028” (Decree No. PҚ–250, 15.08.2025).

Specific measures have been outlined to meet the current needs of water resources in the Republic of Uzbekistan and improve the production system. The goal of the program is to reconstruct 2,551 km of irrigation networks. To achieve these goals, at least 1.3 trillion soums will be allocated annually from the state budget, and 300 million USD will be attracted from international financial institutions.

Additionally, special measures are being taken to improve the irrigation system. One of the main directions of the program is to reduce the area of irrigated land in areas with insufficient water supply. The area of irrigated land is planned to be reduced from 424,000 hectares to 276,000 hectares.

The decree also includes a project to install alternative energy sources (solar panels) and energy-efficient devices at 15 pumping stations by the end of 2025. These projects will help activate the irrigation system and reduce energy consumption.

The major reforms in the management of water resources and development of the irrigation sector will create new opportunities and bring additional benefits to the economy. These measures will not only help conserve water resources but will also have a significant impact on the sustainable development of agriculture and the agro-industrial sector in the future.
