Paid paternity leave may be introduced in Uzbekistan

A new initiative aimed at supporting the institution of the family and strengthening fathers' involvement in child-rearing is being discussed in Uzbekistan. According to a bill under consideration in the Oliy Majlis, working men are planned to be granted short-term paid leave upon the birth of a child.

If the legislative initiative is adopted, fathers will also have the opportunity to officially be with their families during the newborn's care period.

The draft stipulates that working men may be granted an additional leave of 5 working days. During this period, the employee's position will be retained, and their average salary will be paid in full.

According to the authors of the initiative, this innovation will primarily serve to support young families, as the mother and newborn need special attention and help in the first days after birth.

The bill emphasizes that the main purpose of this leave is to provide an opportunity to care for the newborn, assist the spouse, and allocate sufficient time for other children in the family.

Experts believe that such social guarantees not only strengthen family relationships but also serve to increase fathers' responsibility and participation in child-rearing.

Such practices have already been introduced in many developed countries, and it is noted that they have a positive impact on the psychological environment in the family and child upbringing.

For now, the bill is in the discussion stage. It must pass through subsequent stages of parliament to be fully adopted. If the initiative is supported, a new social benefit for working fathers will emerge in Uzbekistan.
