Number of World War II veterans in Uzbekistan has sharply declined

The number of World War II veterans and living witnesses of the war years in Uzbekistan is decreasing every year. As of May 6, 2026, it was reported that a total of 60 war veterans and persons equated to them are living across the country.
According to official data, this list includes 14 frontline veterans who directly participated in combat operations. Additionally, 14 war invalids currently reside in our country.
Furthermore, 13 people who endured the difficult and horrific days of the Siege of Leningrad during World War II are still alive. They are considered living witnesses to one of the most arduous and tragic periods of history.
The list also includes 19 former concentration camp prisoners. They are highly respected as individuals who endured severe suffering and difficult trials during the war years.
For information, previously, by a Presidential decree, support measures for war veterans and persons equated to them were established in connection with the Day of Remembrance and Honor. According to it, a one-time cash reward for each veteran was approved.
Experts believe that these individuals are not only living pages of history but also symbols of courage, resilience, and loyalty to the Motherland. Therefore, showing them respect and care remains one of society's important duties.
Currently, various meetings, festive events, and activities to check on the well-being of veterans are being organized across the country in connection with the Day of Remembrance and Honor.
