The 91-year-old president of Cameroon wants to run for the presidency for the eighth time
Cameroon’s 91-year-old president, Paul Biya, has officially announced his candidacy for the presidential elections scheduled for October 2025, reports Cameroon Online.

National Assembly Speaker Kawae Egije Jibril confirmed the news, stating that Biya will run as a candidate from the Far North region.

Paul Biya has been in power since 1982, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in the world. If re-elected, he will be 99 years old by the time of the next elections in 2032. Following Queen Elizabeth II’s death in 2022, Biya became the oldest serving head of state in the world.

The Cameroonian constitution places no age restrictions on presidential candidates, allowing Biya to seek an eighth consecutive term. Additionally, 10 other individuals have expressed interest in running for the presidency.

Paul Biya is recognized for introducing multiparty democracy in Cameroon and strengthening ties with Western countries. However, the country’s seven-year civil war has significantly impacted its economic development.
