Canada will take similar measures in response to the 25 percent tariff imposed by US President Donald Trump on its goods. This was announced by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
A 25 percent tariff will be imposed on 155 billion Canadian dollars ($106.5 billion) worth of goods imported from the United States. The measures will come into effect on 30 billion Canadian dollars worth of goods from February 4, and on the remaining amount three weeks later. The American tariffs will also take effect on February 4.
The US has imposed a 25 percent tariff on all Canadian goods except energy resources - the tariff on them will be 10 percent.
“The lower rate on energy sources is intended to prevent significant increases in gasoline or utility prices,” a senior US administration official said.
Trudeau added that Canada could also apply non-tariff measures related to energy resources and strategic materials. He also urged Canadians to buy domestic products and vacation in their own country, not in the US.
Trump imposes tariffs on 3 countries
The US will impose tariffs on goods imported from Canada, China and Mexico. President Donald Trump signed the relevant order on February 1. He explained this decision by the threat of illegal immigration and drug smuggling. In response, China warned the US of the beginning of a trade war.
After the US once again raised import duties on Chinese imports, Beijing warned Washington of the risk of a trade war. China's Foreign Ministry said in a statement that there would be no winners in a "trade or tariff war."
"The additional 10 percent tariff will inevitably affect and harm bilateral cooperation in combating drug trafficking between the two countries," the ministry said in a statement.
China said it "resolutely rejects the new tariffs" and "will take appropriate countermeasures to firmly safeguard its rights and interests." China is now considering filing a complaint with the World Trade Organization (WTO) against the United States. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
