A petition to buy California from the US for $1 trillion has garnered the signatures of more than 200,000 Danes. It was launched in response to US President Donald Trump's offer to buy Greenland from Denmark.
"Have you ever looked at a map and thought: 'You know what Denmark needs? More sun, palm trees and roller skates'... Let's buy California from Donald Trump! Yes, you heard right. California can be ours," the petition reads.
The petition lists a number of California's advantages, including "300 sunny days a year," "technological superiority," avocado plantations, and the presence of "Disneyland." The latter is proposed to be renamed "Hans Christian Andersenland." The authors of the petition propose to raise $ 1 trillion for this.
"Mickey Mouse in a Viking helmet? Yes, please," the authors of the petition write. According to the initiator of the campaign, Xavier Dutoit, the idea came to him while on vacation in the Philippines, when he heard an American tourist loudly discussing Trump's proposal for Greenland.
Donald Trump has repeatedly stressed that the purchase of Greenland is "absolutely necessary" for US national and economic security. Against this background, Greenland's Prime Minister Mute Egede stressed that the islanders want independence from the United States and Denmark. At the same time, he announced that he was looking for opportunities to cooperate with Donald Trump.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen has said that US President Donald Trump's statements about plans to annex Greenland are against the interests of the island's people. "Trump cannot annex Greenland. Greenland is Greenland. The people of Greenland are a people protected by international law and the UN Charter," Rasmussen said.
