According to a statement from the US Navy's Sixth Fleet, the collision occurred on February 12 at 23:46 local time in the Mediterranean Sea - near the city of Port Said (Egypt).

The aircraft carrier, including its engine compartment, was not damaged. An investigation into the incident has been launched.

According to the MarineTraffic service, the Besiktas-M merchant ship was sailing under the Panamanian flag. The ship left Port Said and was heading to the Romanian port of Constanta.

The aircraft carrier "Harry Truman" has been actively involved in operations in the Middle East over the past year. In December 2024, it sailed to the region amid attacks by Yemeni Houthi rebels on merchant ships.

At the end of the month, it was reported that the US military had shot down its own destroyer over the Red Sea. “The guided-missile cruiser USS Gettysburg, part of the USS Harry S Truman carrier strike group, accidentally shot down an F/A-18 Hornet aircraft that had taken off from the USS Harry S Truman aircraft carrier,” the report said.
