The US Congress approved the nomination of Robert Kennedy Jr. to the post of head of the country's Department of Health and Human Services at a meeting held on February 13, CNN reports.

It is noted that 52 senators voted in favor of this decision, while 48 congressmen voted against it.

Kennedy's nomination, recommended by Donald Trump, was not supported by all Democratic senators, as well as Republican Mitch McConnell.

According to Reuters, congressmen approved the nomination of 71-year-old Kennedy for the post of Secretary of Health and Human Services after two days of hearings. Democrats have accused Kennedy of spreading conspiracy theories that cast doubt on the safety of life-saving drugs and of having a financial interest in the fight against vaccination. Kennedy has denied these allegations. He has pledged to protect the existing vaccination program.

Robert Kennedy Jr. is the nephew of John F. Kennedy, the 35th President of the United States. In October 2023, he decided to run as an independent candidate in the US presidential election, but in August of this year he suspended his campaign and endorsed Donald Trump.

After winning the election, Trump nominated Kennedy to head the Department of Health and Human Services, saying that he was capable of “ending the epidemic of chronic diseases and making America great and healthy again.”

In early December, dozens of scientists and Nobel laureates urged the US Senate to vote against the appointment of Robert Kennedy Jr. to the post of head of the Department of Health and Human Services. Scientists have noted that Kennedy was one of the most prominent figures in the United States, opposing vaccinations, criticizing water fluoridation, and spreading conspiracy theories about successful treatments for AIDS and other diseases.
