Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Ukraine would participate in talks to resolve the conflict, Interfax, the Russian state news agency, reported on Thursday, February 13.
Nevertheless, Washington remains Moscow's main "opponent" in the negotiations. "One way or another, Ukraine will certainly participate in the negotiations. This will be a bilateral Russian-American direction of the dialogue, and it will certainly be associated with the participation of Ukraine," he said.
At the same time, a Kremlin spokesman said that the legal status of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not discussed during the conversation between Putin and Trump. Earlier, the Russian president said that Zelensky had "no right to sign anything" due to his "illegality."
Overall, Peskov said the phone call between the Russian and US presidents was "constructive, productive and sincere." "Even during Trump's last term, they established very constructive relations, which continue to this day. They allow the two presidents to constructively discuss the most complex problems," he added.
European participation not discussed in Ukraine talks
The conversation between Trump and Putin did not discuss the participation of Europeans in the negotiations to resolve Russia's war in Ukraine, Peskov said. "The European issue was not discussed in any way in yesterday's conversation," he added. According to Peskov, European countries will have to "talk to Washington to somehow take their place" in the negotiations.
