![Former President Poroshenko is suspected of treason](/uploads/posts/2025-02/6852cb671a_i.webp)
You probably remember a man named Petro Poroshenko. In 2014, after Ukrainians overthrew Viktor Yanukovych, presidential elections were held, and this businessman won.
Poroshenko's victory in the elections was brilliant, but we cannot say the same about his presidency. After all, Poroshenko, who came from business and had no bone in politics, was supposed to lead a fragile Ukraine that had lost a large territory like Crimea and was plunged into a state of war in the Donbass.
Poroshenko's presidency was difficult for Ukrainians, and there were many questions about his activities. For example, Ukraine, which is at war with the largest country in the world, for some reason does not develop its army at all, and does not buy weapons at all. To make matters worse, Poroshenko's factories in Russia continue to operate even while the war in the Donbass continues. By the way, for those who don't know: Poroshenko is the founder of the world-famous Roshen candy factory. If you pay attention, the word Roshen is also separated from the word Poroshenko.
In short, since there were so many questions about Poroshenko's presidency, the actor Zelensky easily defeated the confectioner Poroshenko in the 2019 elections. Despite the fact that in addition to the incumbent President Poroshenko, famous politicians Yulia Tymoshenko and Yuriy Boyko also participated in those elections, the political debutant Zelensky won in the second round with 74% of the vote.
The TV series "Servant of the People", which was broadcast on the country's television at that time, played a major role in Zelensky's victory. The film significantly increased Zelensky's ratings. In addition, Zelensky "ate" Poroshenko in a debate held in front of thousands of Ukrainians at the Olimpiysky Stadium in Kiev.
Now he can be accused of treason
Today, the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine announced sanctions against this Poroshenko. In addition to Poroshenko, Konstantin Zhevago and former Privatbank boss Gennady Bogolyubov were also blacklisted by the council. Zelensky confirmed the decision on February 13.
Also sanctioned were Viktor Medvedchuk, Putin's man in Ukraine, who was replaced by the commanders of the Azov battalion at the beginning of the war, and Viktor Kolomoisky, one of Ukraine's richest men. Medvedchuk is now in Russia, while Kolomoisky was arrested by the Security Service of Ukraine in 2023.
Viktor Medvedchuk and Petro Poroshenko on the list are suspected of treason. Medvedchuk, of course, is known to have served Russian interests in Ukraine. Otherwise, Moscow would not have exchanged Medvedchuk, a Ukrainian citizen, for the leaders of the battalion, which Russia has declared fascists. Poroshenko is accused of the same old case - buying coal from Russian-influenced groups in the Donbass. This case was opened shortly after Zelensky became president.
Those who are sanctioned will have their awards received in Ukraine canceled, their assets frozen, they will not be able to carry out commercial transactions, leave Ukraine and change their place of residence within the country.
Poroshenko called the charges against him political and said that President Zelensky ordered them all.
What did Putin say?
After the sanctions were imposed on Poroshenko, a video went viral on the Internet in which Russian President Vladimir Putin said that he was ready to grant him political asylum. This is not a fake, but it is not something that is said these days. Putin said this on February 7, 2022, that is, two weeks before Russia invaded Ukraine.
If you remember, Putin received Macron in the Kremlin and they talked for 6 hours, standing on opposite sides of that famous long table. At a press conference following the meeting, Putin said: “Now they want to accuse Poroshenko of treason. After all, I was not joking when I said that it was my turn. "In this case, we are ready to grant political asylum to Poroshenko. But not because we like his policies, but out of humanity," Putin said. Poroshenko responded by telling the Russian president that Ukraine would solve its problems independently.
