The UK may use Typhoon fighter jets to patrol the skies of Ukraine after the war ends and a peace treaty is signed, The Times reported, citing sources in the British government and the Royal Air Force.

Britain is discussing the creation of an "air police" for Ukraine, similar to NATO's program. Under this program, the alliance has been protecting the airspace of the Baltic states since 2004.

"This option is more likely than creating a no-fly zone over Ukraine, because in the latter case, planes would have to patrol the skies of Ukraine day and night," one of the sources clarified.

The “police mission” is expected to involve dozens of “heavily armed” and constantly ready fighter jets, which are planned to be stationed in Poland.

Such a decision could be part of the security guarantees for Ukraine, as well as allow for a smaller military contingent to monitor compliance with peace agreements on land.

At the same time, Great Britain will have to attract a large number of aircraft and air defense systems for this. Discussions on this issue are at an early stage. However, a source in the Royal Air Force told The Times that “we are ready to do whatever they tell us.”

Ukraine needs 100,000 peacekeepers after the war

Previously, President Volodymyr Zelensky said that after the war, the country needs 100,000 European peacekeepers to prevent a repeat of the Russian aggression. However, according to the Washington Post, the European Union can only send 25-30 thousand troops.

Germany, Italy and Poland doubt the appropriateness of this decision. France, however, wants to send peacekeepers to “non-conflict areas” and not to the front line with the Russian army.

US President Donald Trump has supported the idea of deploying European peacekeepers to Ukraine. However, he has said that American soldiers will not be sent.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stressed that Moscow does not like the proposals to deploy European forces in Ukraine. This issue was discussed during the first official talks between the United States and Russia since the start of the war.

According to Lavrov, the Russian side has conveyed to its American colleagues that the presence of NATO troops on Ukrainian territory, even “under a foreign flag, the flag of the European Union or under national flags,” is unacceptable.

For information, Russia has sent North Korean soldiers to the Kursk region to fight against the Ukrainian army.
