A group of Donald Trump supporters has launched a campaign to change the Constitution so that the incumbent president can remain in office for another term. This was reported by NBC News.
According to the publication's White House correspondent Peter Nicholas, Trump is not taking any measures to hinder his supporters and, moreover, is actively promoting the idea of his next presidential term. According to some representatives of American political circles, he is simply "laughing at" his opponents and critics.
At the end of last week, one of the most important events for American conservative politicians - the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) - took place near Washington. Posters displayed at the rally depicted Trump in ancient Roman garb and read: “Project Third Term” and “For Trump in 2028...and Beyond!”
According to Nicholas, one of the conference organizers, Shane Trejo, 37, said the goal of the event was to persuade conservative Republicans to support a constitutional amendment proposed last month by Trump ally and Republican Congressman Andy Ogles of Tennessee.
In late 2024, Trump himself spoke to Republicans in the House of Representatives about a third term. Later, it was said that his words were not serious.
According to the US Constitution, no one can be president of the United States for more than two terms.
Amending the US Constitution is a very complicated process. It can only be done with a significant consensus and involves two main steps: proposing the amendment and ratifying it. The process is complicated to ensure that a constitutional amendment can only be implemented if there is broad support at the federal and regional levels.
