Donald Trump declares English the official language of the US
President Donald Trump signed an executive order designating English as the official language of the United States, reports the White House. The order states that a common language "strengthens national values" and "creates a better society."

Additionally, Trump rescinded a 2000 order by former President Bill Clinton that required federal agencies and organizations receiving federal funding to provide language assistance to non-English-speaking citizens. Now, agency leaders will decide whether to offer services in other languages.

Reports indicate that while over 30 U.S. states had already recognized English as their official language, this marks the first time it has been designated at the federal level.
