Russian President Vladimir Putin may agree to a ceasefire in Ukraine under certain conditions. According to Bloomberg, Moscow conveyed this proposal to the US delegation during talks in Saudi Arabia in February.
Putin's position and peace conditions
Sources say that Putin believes that it is necessary to develop clear principles for a peace agreement and that this agreement should be monitored by a mechanism based on cogwheel forces.
Russia's main demands:
- Deployment of a peacekeeping mission with the participation of other countries.
- No participation of European countries as peacekeeping forces.
- Ensuring the participation of neutral countries acceptable to Moscow.
The Kremlin is not against the participation of peacekeeping forces from China or other "neutral" countries. However, the presence of European countries in such a mission is unacceptable for Russia.
Position of European countries
Also, Bloomberg reported that European countries are considering the possibility of sending peacekeeping troops to Ukraine. Recently, France, Britain and a number of other European countries have held discussions about sending troops to Kiev. According to the Telegraph, London and Paris plan to send up to 30,000 European military personnel to Ukraine.
Possibility of peace talks
Recently, the topic of peace talks between Russia and Ukraine has been on the agenda again. After US President Donald Trump suspended military aid to Ukraine, Kiev and Moscow began to signal their readiness for talks.
However, the Ukrainian side is in no hurry to accept Russia's demands. President Volodymyr Zelensky emphasizes that ensuring Ukraine's territorial integrity is a prerequisite.
Putin's proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine, especially the conditions for a peacekeeping mission, remains a serious political issue for the international community. The Kremlin does not want European countries to interfere in the peace agreement, while the United States is watching Kiev's reaction. Now, how the next stage of peace talks will proceed is becoming one of the main issues on the political stage.
