The head of the Russian State Duma’s Defense Committee, Andrey Kartapolov, has proposed responding to the recent mass drone attacks on Moscow and other Russian regions by launching a powerful new missile, "Oreshnik."
According to Kartapolov, the decision on whether to proceed with this strike lies with Vladimir Putin, as he is Russia’s Supreme Commander-in-Chief.
"Using 'Oreshnik' would be the right decision, and not just a single one," Kartapolov stated.
Ukrainian Drone Attacks and Russia's Possible Response
Russia’s Ministry of Defense has reported massive Ukrainian drone attacks targeting Moscow, the Moscow region, and other areas, resulting in casualties and destruction.
In response, Kartapolov's proposal has sparked mixed reactions among military analysts.
Some experts believe that the use of a ballistic missile is unlikely, but if carried out, it could be perceived by the U.S. as Russia rejecting peace negotiations.
What is Known About the "Oreshnik" Missile?
The missile was first used on November 21, 2024, during a strike on Dnipro. It is a hypersonic weapon capable of reaching speeds of up to Mach 10.
"Oreshnik" is classified as a medium-range missile, and its use could trigger a strong response from the U.S. and Western countries.
Kremlin and Putin’s Reaction
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov confirmed that Vladimir Putin has been fully briefed on the drone attacks on Moscow.
"Kyiv is striking residential buildings, while Russia targets military facilities," Peskov stated.
At this time, no official decision has been made regarding the use of the "Oreshnik" missile, but such a strike could significantly escalate tensions between Russia and the West. Follow “Zamin” news on “Telegram”
