Thousands of federal agency employees in the United States have been reassigned to tracking and deporting illegal immigrants under the policies of President Donald Trump's administration. This is pushing agencies' other important crime-fighting tasks into the background, Reuters reported.
Law enforcement priorities are shifting
Federal agents who have been fighting child abuse, money laundering, drug trafficking and other crimes are now focusing on tracking and deporting people who violate immigration rules.
“I’ve never seen so much focus on immigration enforcement,” said Teresa Cardinal-Brown, a former employee of the Department of Homeland Security.
She said the focus on immigration enforcement has pushed law enforcement’s core responsibilities to the back burner. However, Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanch has denied this, saying that “all crimes are still being fought.”
How are federal agencies involved?
Even agencies that were not previously involved in immigration policy are now taking part in the crackdowns. For example, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives has been involved.
According to Reuters, 80 percent of the nearly 2,500 federal agents assigned to immigration enforcement since Trump took office have been tasked with tracking and arresting people who are living in the United States illegally.
Social and Legal Implications of the Issue
During his campaign, Trump promised to carry out mass deportations. Since he took office, tens of thousands of people have been arrested on immigration charges.
This situation has led to the overcrowding of temporary detention centers and an increase in the workload of prosecutors and courts. Nevertheless, the Trump administration intends to continue to take tough measures in immigration policy.
Immigration policy in the United States has a significant impact on the activities of the country's law enforcement agencies. As federal agencies are involved in identifying and deporting illegal immigrants, the priority of combating other crimes has decreased. This situation has caused heated debates and discussions about the country's immigration policy.
