Myanmar earthquake death toll reaches 1,700
The death toll from a powerful earthquake in Myanmar has reached 1.7 thousand, according to the Chinese news agency Xinhua. It was also reported that about 3.4 thousand people were injured and about 300 people were missing.

Aftershocks and the impact of the earthquake

According to the Thai Meteorological Department, 168 aftershocks, i.e. repeated tremors of the earthquake, have been recorded in Myanmar since March 28. The magnitude of the tremors ranged from 1.0 to 7.0, with most of them measuring less than 5.0.

Earthquake epicenter and impact

On March 28, a 7.7-magnitude earthquake struck Myanmar. Strong tremors were also felt in neighboring Thailand and China. As of March 30, the death toll in the Thai capital Bangkok has reached 17, with 32 injured. There are also reports of 83 people missing.

Scientists' opinion

According to experts, the cause of this devastating earthquake was the movement of tectonic plates on the Sagaing fault in Myanmar. Since tectonic activity is still ongoing, aftershocks may occur again and the number of victims may increase.

The Myanmar government and international organizations are continuing to provide emergency assistance. Search and rescue operations are underway.
