Putin allows children to work during summer vacation

Russian President Vladimir Putin has opened the door to new opportunities for young people. The head of state has officially approved the employment of teenagers aged 14 to 18 during the summer holidays. This law has been officially published and will come into force on September 1, 2025.

Now teenagers can work in the summer, gain experience and earn money for their needs, without wasting time. But this is also done deliberately - not in any job, but only through state-registered youth associations or employment services.

Also, children over 15 years old are required to give their own written consent. If they are 14 years old, of course, one of the parents must also give permission. Orphans can get a job with special documents.

How much can children work?

According to this law, working hours for teenagers are also set. For example:
- 14-15 year olds cannot work more than 4 hours a day;
- 15-16 year olds can work 5 hours;
- 16-18 year olds can work a maximum of 7 hours.

The big difference from the previous rules is that previously only work in the arts (for example, theater or film) was allowed. Now, there are more areas where it is possible to work.

Interest in teenage labor is growing in Russia

In recent years, the number of working-age people in Russia has been decreasing. Therefore, the need for labor is increasing. According to 2023 data, 86.7 thousand teenagers aged 15-17 worked. Most of them worked in agriculture and forestry (30.1 thousand), low-skilled work (26.3 thousand) and services and trade (17.3 thousand).

In total, there are more than 6 million adolescents aged 15-17 in Russia. Only 1 percent of them are officially employed. For comparison, in the United States, almost 37 percent of adolescents aged 16-19 work or are looking for work.

On the one hand, the new regime will allow adolescents to take a step towards spiritual and material independence during the summer holidays. On the other hand, it will help close the gap in the country's economy.

Many people see this as a positive step. Now the most important thing is to fully ensure the rights and health of children and create a comfortable and safe working environment for them.
