A press conference was held in Kyiv featuring two Chinese citizens who were captured by Ukrainian forces after fighting on the side of Russia. During the event, the prisoners said they had been lured into the war through deception.

According to Wang Guangjun, he had agreed with a Russian recruiter to work as a rehabilitation specialist for wounded soldiers. But upon arrival in Russia, he claims he “ended up in the army and had no choice.”

Zhang Renbo stated that he initially came to Russia as a tourist and later decided to “make some money.” He said he was offered a construction job, but later “things changed,” and he “couldn’t do anything.”

Zhang and Wang said they had no connection to any Chinese government structures.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced on April 8 that the Ukrainian Armed Forces had captured two Chinese citizens. He also said that Kyiv was ready to exchange the Chinese nationals for Ukrainians held in Russian captivity.

China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs officially stated that the country had not sent any of its military to Ukraine.

It should be noted that in 2023, reports emerged of dozens of Indian nationals fighting for the Russian army. Later, after government intervention, those Indians returned home and said they had been lured to Russia under false pretenses and forced to sign military contracts.
