Russia may be reconsidering its military goals in Ukraine and focusing more on short-term plans, CNN reported, citing sources close to US and other Western intelligence agencies.
The report said Moscow now intends to focus on maintaining its positions in the territories it controls, strengthening its defenses and improving the Russian economy, which has been hit hard by sanctions.
According to senior American and Ukrainian officials who spoke to CNN, the changes in Russia's strategic plans are likely to be largely due to efforts to improve relations between Moscow and Washington.
However, one senior official said that Russia has not yet completely abandoned its original “maximalist military goals.” These goals include, in particular, the desire to take control of new territories in Ukraine.
It is worth noting that US intelligence officials told President Donald Trump’s advisers earlier this year that Russia could choose just such a strategy.
In the meantime, the Kremlin has once again made its position clear. According to President Vladimir Putin’s press secretary Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin’s strategic goals have not changed since the start of the military operation and are aimed at ensuring the country’s national security.
A month ago, Dmitry Peskov expressed Russia’s readiness for negotiations and a peaceful settlement, emphasizing that this should serve the country’s interests.
Thus, on the one hand, Russia is trying to consolidate the territories under its control and stimulate its economy, while on the other hand, it has not completely retreated from its long-term plans. Diplomatic struggles over Ukraine, a key issue for Moscow, are likely to continue.
