Only a few days remain before the election of the new Pope, an event of great importance for the Catholic world. Ahead of this historic occasion, there is growing speculation about which name the next pontiff might choose. Liam Temple, associate professor of Catholic history at the Centre for Catholic Studies at Durham University, shared his thoughts with CNN.
According to Temple, the new Pope is likely to select a name that reflects his spiritual and social values. In particular, the expert believes the names Leo or Innocent would be the most meaningful choices.
He explained that the name "Leo" refers to Pope Leo XIII, who entered history as a social reformer, fighting for equality, human rights, decent working conditions, and fair wages. If the new pontiff aims to focus on such social programs, this name would suit him well.
The name “Innocent” refers to Pope Innocent XIII, known for his strict stance against corruption and for promoting financial transparency. Choosing this name could show the new Pope's commitment to tackling such issues.
The expert also noted that if the new Pope comes from the Global South — such as Africa or Latin America — names like Gelasius, Miltiades, or Victor might be chosen. These names have historical ties to African Popes and could reflect the new pontiff’s heritage.
Experts say the tradition of Popes adopting a new name after election dates back to the 10th century. Those from France or Germany often chose Italian-sounding names in honor of their Italian predecessors.
About 135 cardinals under the age of 80 will gather in the Vatican on May 7 to elect the new Pope. During this time, they will reside at the St. Martha’s Guest House in Vatican City.
The election process will take place in the Sistine Chapel, a site of great historical and cultural value, adorned with masterpieces by Michelangelo and other Renaissance artists. The cardinals will be completely secluded from the outside world during the vote.
The election result is traditionally announced by the color of the smoke from the chapel chimney. White smoke means a new Pope has been elected; black smoke means the election is still ongoing.
For now, the Catholic world continues to wait eagerly to see who the new Pope will be and what name he will choose. This decision is significant not only for the Church but for social and political life as well. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
