Belarus has made a historic decision to mark the 80th anniversary of the Victory in World War II. President Alexander Lukashenko has signed a law on amnesty, which will cover thousands of people currently serving sentences in the country's prisons.
According to the press service of the Belarusian president, the amnesty will apply to about 8,000 prisoners. This historic step is being seen as a symbol of humanity and forgiveness not only for the victims, but also for society as a whole.
The amnesty will mainly apply to prisoners serving sentences for crimes that pose a low social risk or are not very serious, and their sentences will be reduced or canceled altogether. According to the law, this measure will apply only to those who have fully compensated for the damage caused and have made positive recommendations during the term of their sentence.
According to the new law, the sentence of citizens who have reached the age of 70, who have been sentenced to up to six years in prison and have no previous convictions will be replaced by a form of "restriction of liberty". Also, for crimes that caused the death of a person by negligence, the sentence may be partially reduced - up to one year.
The initiative of the Belarusian leader did not stop there. Alexander Lukashenko also pardoned 42 convicts serving sentences for crimes related to extremism. Among those pardoned are people with chronic diseases, people with disabilities and people with minor children.
This step, according to the presidential administration, is “an important step towards ensuring humanity, forgiveness and social justice in society.”
This amnesty in Belarus is expected to be positively assessed not only within the country, but also internationally. Such humane initiatives can play an important role in reforming the penal system, rehabilitating convicts in society and strengthening preventive measures.
