No white smoke has come out on the first day of the conclave in the Vatican: no new pope has been elected

On May 7, one of the most important events in Roman Catholicism - the election of a new pope - took place. However, the expected result was not recorded the day before: black smoke rising from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel confirmed that the cardinals had not yet agreed on a single candidate.

The black smoke rising from the chimney of the Sistine Chapel in St. Peter's Square in Rome is an important symbol in the Catholic Church. According to the rule, if the cardinals cannot choose a candidate by at least two-thirds of the votes - in this case 89 votes - during the vote, black smoke is emitted from the chimney. If an agreement is reached, the white smoke will be used to inform the whole world that a new pope has been elected.

The meeting is attended by 133 cardinals, and it is considered one of the largest conclaves in the history of the Roman Catholic Church. The cardinals gathered to choose a person worthy of succeeding Pope Francis after his death on April 21.

It is noted that the cardinals were sworn to secrecy before the conclave began, and since they have not yet communicated with the public outside the Vatican, all information about the election process is revealed only by the smoke from the chimney.

In Rome's St. Peter's Square, tens of thousands of discerning Catholics and tourists, despite the gloomy mood they experienced immediately after seeing the black smoke, are looking forward to the next vote. The next vote will take place on May 8. If white smoke rises on that day, then Catholics around the world will have their 267th pope.

Hundreds of candidates have already vying for the papacy, but there is no clear information about the favorites and leading cardinals. Given the mysterious atmosphere of the conclave and Roman Catholic tradition, all decisions are made in strict secrecy.

The cardinals are expected to choose not only a religious symbol, but also a political and moral leader through this election, which is watched by Muslims, Christians and other faiths around the world. Therefore, each day of the conclave is perceived as an important process for all of humanity.
