Finnish President Alexander Stubb made an interesting statement about an important phone call he had with former US President Donald Trump. According to him, on May 17, he held a long conversation with Trump and later also connected with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky by phone.
During these conversations, Stubb noted a clear difference in both leaders’ attitudes toward the situation:
“Zelensky is patient and prefers the diplomatic route in negotiations. But Trump’s patience is running out, and he feels seriously pressured regarding the situation around Putin,” Stubb stated in an interview with Finland’s STT news agency.
The Finnish President added that over the past two weeks, diplomatic talks surrounding Ukraine have taken a positive turn and laid the groundwork for further improvement.
Stubb believes that Zelensky’s participation in the NATO summit in The Hague on June 24–25 is extremely important. Finland has declared full support for the Ukrainian leader’s involvement in the summit.
Previously, the respected Italian news agency ANSA reported, citing diplomatic sources, that the US opposes inviting Zelensky to the NATO summit. So far, only leaders of four non-member countries — Japan, South Korea, Australia, and New Zealand — have been officially invited.
Such conflicting reports clearly show the diversity of international approaches to the situation around Ukraine.
