A strong earthquake with a magnitude of 5.8 struck the southwestern coast of Turkey. According to the information released by the Natural Disaster and Emergency Management Authority (AFAD), the epicenter of the earthquake was in the Aegean Sea, near the city of Marmaris, one of the popular tourist centers. The depth of the earthquake was about 68 kilometers.
Mugla Governor Idris Akbiyik said that many people panicked and tried to quickly move to safer places. In this process, some residents and tourists were forced to jump from a height, as a result of which 34 people received various injuries. According to the latest information, the total number of injured people reached 69 people. Of these, 55 people were hospitalized in medical institutions, while 14 preferred to receive medical care at home.
Unfortunately, due to the alarming circumstances caused by the earthquake, a 14-year-old teenager died due to panic.
So far, local administrations and responsible agencies have not reported any serious problems with infrastructure, electricity, natural gas, drinking water and sewage systems. However, experts are constantly monitoring the situation and urging the population to be careful.
It should be noted that Turkey has been one of the most seismically active regions in recent years. Strong earthquakes have been observed here regularly, causing great concern for the population. In February 2023, a series of strong earthquakes measuring 7.5 and above on the Richter scale occurred in Turkey. This natural disaster covered 11 provinces of the country and also affected neighboring countries. As a result, more than 50 thousand people died, hundreds of thousands were left homeless.
At the same time, Turkish seismologists and international experts warn of the possibility of even more powerful and destructive earthquakes. In particular, it is emphasized that there is a particular danger for the Sea of Marmara and the city of Istanbul. According to seismologists, the probability of a strong earthquake in Istanbul by 2030 is very high, and its negative consequences may be even more severe than the disaster in 1999. As is known, more than 17 thousand people died as a result of the 1999 earthquake.
Experts are conducting work to explain to the population how to follow seismic safety measures and how to behave in emergency situations. They demand that security measures be strengthened, especially in multi-storey buildings and tourist facilities.
Currently, the situation in Marmaris is under control, and the government and rescue services continue to take the necessary measures. All forces and means have been mobilized to eliminate the negative consequences of the earthquake and ensure the safety of the population. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
