An Air India Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, flying from Ahmedabad, India, crashed into a hospital building for doctors. The horrific crash claimed the lives of 290 people. Of the 242 people on board, only one, British passenger Vishwas Kumar Ramesh, survived. The rest of the passengers and crew, as well as many people on the ground, were killed.
The exact number of victims, injuries, and missing people in the aftermath still varies widely. More than 50 students and staff at the hospital were hospitalized, 4-5 are missing, and several more remain in intensive care units.
Photos showed the tail of the plane still protruding from the collapsed building. US and Indian officials have jointly formed a special team to investigate the crash. Boeing said in a statement that it was ready to support Air India and was actively cooperating with the US National Transportation Safety Board.
Ramesh is the only surviving passenger, who was sitting next to his brother in seat 11A. He is currently being treated in hospital. According to doctor Rajnish Patel, Ramesh is suffering from "post-traumatic amnesia" and has little memory of the crash. However, doctors assess his condition as "stable".
The Indian government has said that former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani may also have died in the crash. He was in the area at the time of the crash. This information has not yet been officially confirmed, but sources close to him say that this information should be taken seriously.
British MP Shivani Raja said she had contacted Ramesh's family and called the incident a "miracle." A special reception center has been set up at London's Gatwick Airport for the relatives of the victims, where they are being provided with psychological and informational support.
The investigation is being conducted at the international level. US President Donald Trump, reacting to the crash, promised that the US would provide any assistance if necessary. "This is a terrible tragedy. The United States stands ready to help India," Trump said.
This crash served as a serious warning not only for India, but also for the entire aviation safety system worldwide. All parties involved in global aviation must take decisive measures to prevent such disasters.
