The tense and dangerous situation in the Middle East has been enriched by another important event. CNN correspondent Dana Bash, citing US President Donald Trump, reported that Iranian representatives who participated in negotiations on the nuclear deal were killed as a result of an Israeli military operation.
During a telephone conversation with a journalist, Trump commented on the Israeli strikes on Iran and noted that some of the people with whom he was in constant contact are no longer alive. Trump called them “strong-minded people” and said in a very sarcastic tone that “they died not from the flu or coronavirus, but precisely as a result of this operation.”
The reason for these strikes carried out by Israel was indicated by the fact that Iran had achieved significant successes in creating nuclear weapons. On the night of June 13, the Israeli military launched a large-scale attack on Iranian nuclear and military facilities, as well as high-ranking leaders. As a result, several senior leaders of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, including the commander of the corps, Hossein Salami, the chief of the General Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, Mohammad Baqeri, the head of the “Khatam al-Anbiya” unit, Gholam Ali Rashid, and leading nuclear physicists Faridun Abbasi Davani and Azad Mohammad Mahdi Tehranchi, were killed.
According to official data, 78 people were killed and more than 320 were injured in these attacks. These events had a serious political and military resonance not only in Iran, but also throughout the region.
In response, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps launched an operation against Israel, codenamed “True Promise-3”, that evening. Three missiles were fired from Iranian territory into Israel, resulting in explosions in several cities, injuring more than 70 people and killing one woman. Meanwhile, new explosions were heard in Tehran.
The US and Iran resumed talks on the nuclear deal in April and held five rounds of talks. The talks were held mainly in Oman and indirectly. Iran denies all accusations that it is seeking to create nuclear weapons and insists that it has no intention of stopping uranium enrichment under the agreement.
This recent escalation is causing serious concern in the international arena. In particular, military clashes between Iran and Israel, the deaths of scientists and high-ranking officials could pose even more serious threats to global security.
