U.S. President Donald Trump is once again facing the prospect of impeachment. The reason — his decision to launch a military strike against Iran without Congressional approval. The move has sparked intense criticism among Democrats, with some lawmakers calling it a constitutional violation.
New York Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a member of the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, called Trump’s action a “serious violation of the Constitution and Congressional war powers.” She wrote on social media: “The president’s tragic decision to bomb Iran risks launching an impulsive war. This is absolutely a clear basis for impeachment.”
Another Democrat, Representative Sean Casten of Illinois, also condemned the order: “No president has the authority to bomb a country that poses no imminent threat to the U.S. without Congressional approval. This is clearly an impeachable offense.” While acknowledging there may not be enough votes for impeachment, he added: “But such decisions cannot be made without Congress.”
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries also criticized Trump, stating that the president “failed to seek Congressional authorization for the use of military force and risks entangling America in a disastrous Middle Eastern war.” Jeffries added: “Donald Trump bears full and total responsibility for any negative consequences arising from his unilateral military action.”
It’s worth noting that past presidents — including Bill Clinton, Barack Obama, and Trump during his first term — also launched military operations in countries like Libya, Sudan, Afghanistan, and Iran without Congressional approval. This continues to fuel legal debate about the president’s authority over foreign military actions.
Trump’s supporters defend his decision. Vice President J.D. Vance said in an NBC News interview: “The president has clear authority to prevent the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction. Any serious legal scholar would agree this is within his powers.”
Still, Democratic leaders argue that Trump’s actions raise not only legal concerns, but also reflect an abuse of executive authority. This may pave the way for another impeachment attempt. Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
