Viktor Orban: if Ukraine joins the EU and NATO, Europe will be drawn into war
One of the most intense and controversial topics on Europe's political stage is Ukraine's accession to the European Union and NATO. Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has taken a sharp and clear position on this issue. In his view, granting a place to Ukraine in the EU or NATO may become a hot spot for Europe and lead Western countries into open conflict with Russia.

Viktor Orban wrote on his Facebook page:
“If the European Union admits Ukraine into its ranks, that immediately means open war for Europe. Even after a ceasefire, there will be a constant threat of war between Europe and Russia.”

He also addressed the issue of NATO membership:
“If Ukraine joins NATO, war with Russia could start immediately. This further increases the risk of a Third World War.”

The Hungarian leader believes that from the standpoint of protecting the country’s main security interests, it is not possible to be part of a common integration framework with Ukraine.

Against the backdrop of these sharp statements, it is also important to note not only the NATO and EU summits, but also the declaration by political and public figures in Budapest supporting Ukraine. The declaration contains accusations against Russia and demands for military assistance to Ukraine. At the same time, the Hungarian government was criticized for opposing Ukraine’s accession to the EU.

Viktor Orban responded to this criticism as follows:
“Those who signed the declaration are not taking into account Hungary’s interests. As long as the Russia–Ukraine war continues, they are unwittingly serving Russia’s interests every day. Moreover, they misunderstand the interests of the European Union.”

Orban emphasizes that the Hungarian government has from the beginning supported a peaceful resolution of this conflict. It did not participate in delivering weapons to the Ukrainian army, but it condemned Russia’s aggressive actions and recognized Ukraine’s sovereignty. At the same time, Hungary provided economic and humanitarian aid to Ukraine and accepted refugees.

In the EU and NATO, opposing opinions regarding Ukraine’s accession are still ongoing. Viktor Orban’s strict statement has become a subject of major discussions in European security policy.
