Russia has officially recognized the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan. This was announced by Russia’s presidential special envoy to Afghanistan, Zamir Kabulov, according to Russian media.
On the morning of July 3, Russian Foreign Minister Deputy Andrey Rudenko received copies of the credentials of the new Afghan ambassador to Moscow, Gul Hasan. Thus, Afghanistan’s first official ambassador began performing his duties in Russia.
Gul Hasan arrived in Moscow on July 1 and started work on July 2. He is the first person to be appointed ambassador since the Taliban took power in 2021.
Russia initiated this step in April. Specifically, Russia’s diplomatic mission in Afghanistan was previously only at the level of a chargé d'affaires, and has now been elevated to embassy status. This update followed the removal of the Taliban movement from Russia’s list of banned organizations.
The new Afghan government, formed since 2021, had not been recognized internationally until now. Russia had not rushed to official recognition, but diplomatic relations were never broken.
Now this step is generating significant interest in international political discourse. In particular, will this decision influence other countries to recognize Afghanistan? Read 'Zamin' on Telegram!
