The Republic of Armenia has officially announced its intention to become a member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). This was stated in an official declaration by the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
It is noted that the Republic of Armenia, having familiarized itself with the core principles of the SCO — territorial integrity, non-use of force, and inviolability of borders — has expressed its readiness to become a full-fledged member of the organization.
"Sharing the core principles of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization — namely territorial integrity, non-use of force, and inviolability of borders — the Republic of Armenia has expressed its desire to join the SCO," the official statement reads.
According to analysts, this statement marks a new direction in Yerevan’s foreign policy. In recent years, Armenia has tried to maintain a political balance between the West and Russia. Now, the desire to deepen cooperation with regional organizations is becoming increasingly evident.
For reference: the SCO was founded in 2001 and is currently a regional structure that includes China, Russia, India, Pakistan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, and Uzbekistan.
If Yerevan’s initiative is realized, the SCO’s political and geographical influence may expand further. However, membership has not yet been officially approved, and the organization has not issued any formal response. Therefore, the future outcome of this step remains to be seen.
